TMJD Symptoms

Anterior or Forward Disc Displacement

Jaw pain occurs due to Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) which is mostly mistaken for recurring tension headaches. The symptoms that patient has due to jaw pain will not be treated by the tension headache treatment. These symptoms are curable and should be treated same as other joint pains. If jaw disorder is ignored and not treated then all the symptoms will not vanish. Differential diagnosis for it could be cluster headache, sinus headache, and tension headache, which makes it difficult to diagnose. It occurs commonly in the ages of 20 to 50 years, could come earlier or later. This is seen in women more commonly than in males in ratio of 8:1. This type of TMJ headache is not diagnosed by the doctor as it its concern of dentist. Most of the dentists are not trained properly to diagnose and treat this TMJ headache, as its source is unidentified. These symptoms are also common to MPDS or Myofacial Pain dysfunction syndrome, which ideally has more of muscular spasms.

Their main concern is to treat the symptoms rather than resolving the main etiology behind the TMJ headache. Commonly the treatment rendered by most of the dentists for this headache is by splint therapy, occlusal equilibration, night guards, some drugs, etc. The most common symptoms are headache that comes from behind the eyes or the side of the head. These headaches are also common at the junction where neck is attached to the skull along with neck aches. These TMJ headaches are confused with tension headache, as they are oftenassociated with stress.

The pain may also be felt in one or both of the shoulders. We with a very unique method of diagnosing and treatment for the patient have restored their health, comfort, and optimal functionality. We have treated many of the patients with this problem who were never satisfied with any of the treatments done by other dentists. These patients come to us with tensed and irritated faces and went back with a huge smile forever.

Temporomandibular Joint & Depression and Psychiatric sickness comorbidity (co presence)

Recent studies have shown that Jaw joint disorders affect the muscles of the joint that connects lower jaw to the skull and also lead to Depression. In various research works done, depressive symptoms were more often related to the jaw pain and anxiety symptoms were associated to the muscle pain. Researches have given us the information that TMJ pain may be the symptoms of depression, anxiety and these conditions lead to increased jaw muscle activity that could cause inflammation and pain.

Everyone has felt the feeling of sadness or depression at one point of time. But these are occasional and are for short period of time that goes by within a couple of days. Depression jumble ups the life and small daily life things sound irritating; this condition is painful for you and the one who cares for you. Depression is so common now days in all age groups, but is overall a serious illness. These people usually ignore the treatment or even if some go for it are given antidepressants such as Mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or Tricyclic’s, Talk Therapy, Psychotherapy to bring them out of depression.

Our TMJ Specialist Dr.Sanjay Arora proposed a few years ago that the nerves that can lead to this mental disorder are in close proximity to the jaw joint. This concept is carried in his treatment procedure to cure depression and mood related disorders those happen due to TMJ headaches. He has elaborated this in his published hypothesis- “IFRATEMPORAL DISC CATASTROPHE” or plain “INFRATEMPORAL CATASTROPHE”. This Branch of TMJ Dentistry employs numerous methodologies to correct such issues.

Our well trained doctors usevarious précise tools such as a T scan, Bio EMG, Jaw Tracker, Tens Therapy’s and much more to correct the jaw joint abnormalities. These detectors help us to locate the problem precisely and further help in accurate treatment.
